Easy As Pie Handkerchief Skirt Tutorial

These skirts are all the rage for little kids, but they can be used for adults too! When I mad my first handkerchief skirt like this, I got so many compliments, and I made about 3 more just like it! The possibilities are endless with this design, and I love how many fabrics look beautiful with it. The handkerchief skirt how-to shows you how easy it can be to make this 2-seamed skirt. It is very fun, and when you wear it it flows beautifully! The fabric you need for this is some kind of knit, preferably jersey that stretches and flows. Any other kind of fabric won’t move the way you want, or fit correctly, so jersey, ity, or anything with a minimum 30% stretch in it will be great.

The first step is to fold a square of fabric in half, then in half again. This has four layers now. The corner with the folds (not the open edges) gets cut off in a circle. This measurement is 1/4 of your waist. the two sides connecting the edge of the circle to the hem are the length of the short part of the handkerchief skirt, so make sure it’s long enough!IMG_5267

What I did next is cut a waistband. This is your waist measurement, or you can just stretch it around you and take that measurement. It should be twice as wide up and down as you want it.IMG_5270

Then you sew the two short sides together, keeping right sides together.IMG_5273

Flip it in half, with the raw edges together and the pretty side out.IMG_5275

Now you are going to keep right sides together, and sew the waistband on.IMG_5277

Keep all 3 raw edges out, and keep the right sides together. Sew all the way around the circle and finish the seam. I used a serger, but you can use a straight stitch and finish with a zig zag.

That’s it! If you used a fabric that frays, feel free to finish off the edge with a double rolled hem, but if you used jersey or ITY fabric, it isn’t needed. Wear your new handkerchief skirt with pride! You did it!IMG_5279

Feel free to send photos and stories of your own projects, I’d love to see what you did with the DIY simple handkerchief skirt tutorial!
